There’s not much that’s all-new in Disney’s reworking of their classic adaptation of The Jungle Book. Raised by a pack of wolves and panther Bagheera (the voice of Ben Kingsley) in the jungle, orphan boy Mowgli (Neel Sethi) is targeted by evil tiger Shere Khan (Idris Elba) and forced to flee – eventually teaming up with bear Baloo (Bill Murray, who’s playing the only character blessed with an expressive face).

It wasn’t all that long ago that Geelong barely had any book stores at all. And if you asked the experts, this was to be expected: printed books were on the way out and the collapse of both Angus & Robinson (who also owned Borders) and Collins book chains were just collateral damage. Shows what they know. Printed book sales have stabilised and show no signs of vanishing, and books stores – both Australia wide and in Geelong – are on their way back. Don’t believe us? Just check out the following list:

Remember when comedy used to be funny? No, that’s not a dig at the quality of Australian comedy, well, it could be, because it’s been a while since “funny” was a word that could be legitimately applied to much of it but rather a statement of fact.

When Richie Ramone steps out on the stage at CHERRYROCK016 next month he’ll have one thing on his mind. “It’s always been about the fans. I don’t play just ‘cause I wanna play, I play to put on a show for the kids to have a good time.”

Life wasn’t meant to be easy, and few people really understand that more than American singer/songwriter Ryan Bingham. The Grammy and Academy Award winner heads back to Australia soon for an extensive tour, but brings with him the pain of recently losing both parents in terrible circumstances. A pain that has been slightly tempered by a Bingham starting his own family.

Lennon & McCartney, Richards & Jagger, DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince – throughout history select musical duos have embodied a special chemistry. New York based act MS MR vocalist Lizzy Plapinger and producer Max Hershenow are another fine example of this rare occurrence. After meeting at the renowned Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, the pair became fast friends and have become virtually inseparable ever since.

The Go Set are a familiar set of faces in regional Victoria, as is their unique brand of music inspired by the likes of Clash, the Pogues, Billy Bragg, and Radio Birdman. We had a chat with the band in the lead up to their show in Geelong.

Last issue I was waxing lyrical about an overseas artist coming to Geelong, but there’s more to life than welcoming guests. Making a bit of noise (well, music, but you know what I mean …) is Derek and the Champs, and they’ve been playing Pistol Pete’s and the Back Hatt (and other local venues) pulling an increasing crowd. That’s not so much of a surprise, when you look at the line-up – Rod Hoe, Peter Kure, Ian Wilson and Gary Quick.
