Grant Smillie

With a venue in LA, his own record label, a brewing company among many others, somehow DJ Grant Smillie managed to make some time to chat to Forte magazine and for a show this New Year’s at the Pier in Geelong.

New Years at The Sporting Globe

Some people wait all year for the celebrations of New Year’s Eve, but as soon as it comes around the countdown is finished and it’s another 365 days until it happens again. That’s where The Sporting Club are a point of difference. Instead of just one chance to celebrate, they’ve got three, and each brings a different themed party. We had a chat with Luke Peters about what we can expect from the celebration, three times over.

King George Fish and Grill

“We care about our food and our customers so much, we don’t just wake up, come to work and go home – we breath it,” George says. “I wake up every day super pumped to smash out some great food and talk to customers as well. I think that’s how I’ve been brought up with mum and dad, and everyday here I get the staff and do a pep talk. There’s no point creating a negative workspace environment, it’s just like soccer if you have one negative player the team is going to collapse.”

Spoonbill

For many up-and-coming artists, it would be a dream to perform at a music festival. For Jim Moynihan, better known on stage as Spoonbill, is not only well versed in performing at music festivals, but around the world. Jim has been performing at the Rainbow Serpent Festival for close to a decade, playing up to 17 sets in that time.

Bluestone Blues Festival with Geoff Achison

Geoff Achison is celebrating 20 years in the music industry, and headlining the Bluestone Festival. He first began playing in his father’s dance band at the age of 13. Soon after, he heard John Mayall and the Blues Breakers (with a young Eric Clapton on guitar) playing the opening strains of ‘All your Love’ by Otis Rush and “it just burst out of the speakers!”.

Blackwood Jack Exclusive

Warrnambool lads, Blackwood Jack are set to launch their self-produced, 6 track EP this weekend at The Loft in their hometown….

Imogen Brough

With her spine tingling, angelic voice, wavy brown hair and exotic looks, Imogen Brough has unofficially become the poster girl of Geelong. She’s been the ambassador for Geelong Sidewalk Sales two years in a row, was successful in raising funds through a Pozible campaign for her second EP but, surprisingly, the focus wasn’t always on Imogen’s talent.

The Meanies

For fans of Melbourne’s indie punk band The Meanies, summer is about to get a whole lot sweeter. As part of their Silver Jubilee Tour, Link, Ringo, Wally and Jaws have teamed up with Poison City and Tym Records to put out re-issues of The Meanies’ classic back catalogue. Prepare for a trip down Aussie punk-rock lane.

Whole Lotta Love

No matter who you are or what your taste in music is, chances are you love at least one Led Zeppelin song, or you’ve got some sort of childhood memory attached to their bands. We had a chat to Amy Findlay, drummer for Stonefield, who’s set to perform in the Led Zeppelin celebration show: Whole Lotta Love.

AlunaGeorge

They’ve been heralded by some as the saving grace of modern British pop music, charged with re-inventing a genre that had lost its way. Whatever you believe, it’s hard to deny Aluna Francis and George Reid are a match made in musical heaven. Singer-songwriter Aluna’s honey-dipped vocals, set against her “partner-in-crime” producer George’s smooth and seductive beats, make them unlike anything else out there – it feels like everything they touch turns to gold.

The Gaslight Anthem

Jersey boys, The Gaslight Anthem, are currently at the business end of their Get Hurt world tour. They’ve spent the better part of 2014 on the road, playing to packed clubs, concert halls and arenas across Europe, the UK and North America before they finish up Down Under in the New Year. On a rare day off in New Orleans, bass player Alex Levine called in for a chat.

Dallas Frasca

“As songwriters/performers I suppose we understand the powerful and influential role you are in when you stand up in front of a lot of people. It’s your choice and responsibility what sort of art and message you deliver to the world so at this point I suppose we’d prefer to inspire and empower people rather than writing shallow and meaningless crap, but each to their own. At the end of the day, we write about things that mean something to us.”

Analogue Academy

What started as a friendship at work and a mutual love for the arts and photography, Daniel Horvat, James Cox and Joshua Maxwell de Hoog have since turned their passions into Analogue Academy: a café, gallery and film processing lab with the possibility to flow beyond that.

Off The Wall – Etch Gallery and Studios’ First Birthday Exhibition

A wonderful eclectic mix of work from the Geelong region’s talented, new and emerging artists. ETCH invites you to come join in and help celebrate this milestone. It’s the perfect opportunity to see what work local artists have been making. The exhibition as the title suggests is an off the wall show; meaning that when one of these fabulous artworks is purchased it can be wrapped and taken home straight off the wall – there is no waiting until the end of the exhibition.

Saints & Sailors

After receiving a bit of a facelift, the Portarlington venue is ready for a Summer season and whatever celebration you care to bring along with you. Adapt at multi tasking the venue offers a spot to grab a bite to eat, listen to some great live music and a stunning view across the bay. We had a chat to one of the owners Mitch, about his pretty excellent spot on the coast.

Blues Boot Camp

“It’s important but people who are passionate about performing music will always find a way. Musicians in the industry working at the front line have learned a lot of lessons, have a lot of contacts and experienced many different scenarios, they have a lot of knowledge to pass on, so it’s got to be a good thing to pick their brains. If it came to text book verses experience, I would pick experience every time.”

New Year's on The Pier

There’s nothing worse than getting to the day before New Year’s Eve and realising you don’t have a single iota of how you’re going to bring in the New Year. That’s where the people at The Pier Geelong come in; they’ve organised everything for you at a tidy price and extremely picturesque venue.

Bluestone

For blues lovers there’s no better way to see in the New Year than by attending Bluestone. Now in its 19th year, the two-day event staged by Geelong’s Sleepy Hollow Blues Club features an impressive lineup of classic and original blues music from some Australian legends and emerging artists.

Have You Seen My ARIA?

So, the ARIAs are done for another year and our congratulations go out to all the winners, and those who were nominated. Sia did alright, picking up the gong for Album of the Year and Best Female Artist among her four wins. Best Male Artist, meanwhile, went to Chet Faker, who also picked up Best Independent Release. Iggy Azalea secured Breakthrough Artist Release while Best Group was picked up by Sheppard. Those 5 Seconds of Summer heartthrobs took out Song of the Year.

Geoff Achison

If you look at the best Australian blues guitarists of all time, Geoff Achison is without a doubt on the list. In 1994, Achison released his debut album Big Machine and since then has gone in leaps and bounds. I got the opportunity to sit down with Achison recently to have a chat about guesting with the Allman Brothers, playing alongside his long-time mentor and collaborator Dutch Tilders and how it feels to be celebrating the anniversary of the disc.

Lily and The Drum

In the past three years Lily and the Drum averaged out at about 100 gigs per year, and lucky for…

That's F**ked Up!

Soundwave’s done it again! Some exciting new acts have just been added to the already heavy live-up! Fans rejoice…

Portugal. The Man

While they may regret the punctuation in the middle of their name, there’s not much else the four-piece band could add to that list. When I sat down to chat with bassist and vocalist Zach Carothers, the band was in the midst of a free tour in Australia, skydiving and generally living it up.

Revolution

Combining indie-pop guitar sounds of bands like The Jungle Giants and the sweet melodic crooning of Matt Corby, there is a new Geelong band on the rise: meet Revolution. From the outset they may seem like a bunch of young folk getting together to have a jam, but since taking out the regional final of the Push Start Battle of the Bands in Geelong at Courthouse ARTS recently, they are a band on the rise, and one to watch in the coming months.
