Nature’s wonder is captured at Wildlife Photographer of the Year

Take in the beauty of the natural world at Geelong's National Wool Museum.

There’s something otherworldly about standing in front of a photograph that feels alive — not metaphorically, but viscerally, like the creature inside the frame could blink at any moment. That’s the spell Wildlife Photographer of the Year casts, and lucky for us, that spell is sweeping into Geelong.

Fresh from its iconic presentation at the Natural History Museum in London, the internationally acclaimed exhibition lands at the National Wool Museum with all the sensory spectacle that has made it a global phenomenon. In London, images were displayed in towering, large-format light panels — cinematic portals glowing in the dim, that seemed to breathe with the animals they showcased. The National Wool Museum is bringing the same luminous intensity to regional Victoria. Think: the soft hum of atmosphere, immersive soundscapes and photographs so sharp they feel more real than real life. You don’t just view these images; you step into the moment the shutter snapped.

Each year, the competition draws over 60,000 entries from photographers of all ages and experience levels from 113 countries and territories all over the world, highlighting its enduring appeal. These are not your casual hikers with a lucky shot. These are researchers, conservationists, explorers and artists working in blistering heat, bone-deep cold and conditions where most of us would last approximately three minutes — all to capture a fragment of the wild world most humans will never witness first-hand. Their collective work forms a visual plea: look closer, care deeply, act urgently.

The exhibition categories read like chapters of a planetary diary, spanning the striking intimacy of Animal Portraits, which reveal the character etched into every feathered or furred face, to the Behaviour categories that capture courtship dances, territorial clashes and the quiet tenderness of parenting in the wild. Underwater Worlds shimmers with bioluminescent drama and the mysteries of the deep, while Urban Wildlife explores how foxes, falcons and other tenacious species navigate the architecture of human life. Perhaps most moving are the Young Photographer categories, showcasing the emerging generation of storytellers already stepping up to document, and defend, the planet. Together they reveal the breadth of our planet’s narrative.

This year’s winners are nothing short of breath-taking. The overall grand title image from Bidyut Kalita is a study in patience and precision (pictured): a scene that balances fragility and power in one suspended second. Other category winners reveal rare behaviours — predators mid-pounce, birds performing elaborate rituals, primates sharing quiet affection. Some images are heart-warming; others are harrowing. All are undeniably human in the way they connect us to creatures we may never meet but suddenly feel responsible for.

That emotional punch is intentional, and it’s part of why the National Wool Museum is thrilled to bring the exhibition to Geelong.

“We’re thrilled to share this exclusive viewing with our community,” says Museum Director Padraic Fisher. “Wildlife Photographer of the Year is one of the most celebrated photography exhibitions in the world, and it’s a privilege to bring these stunning images to Geelong. This event is a wonderful way to combine festive fun with a deeper appreciation for our planet.”

It’s also a testament to the National Wool Museum’s growing cultural force.

Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM echoes the sentiment, saying, “This is a fantastic opportunity for families and visitors to experience world-class photography right here in Geelong. The National Wool Museum continues to deliver exceptional cultural experiences, and this Christmas preview is a perfect example of how we celebrate creativity and community together.”

To kick off the Christmas season and exhibition launch from Friday 5 December, the Museum is hosting a special Christmas Preview Night on Thursday 10 December from 5–8pm, with free entry granting visitors full access to the exhibition and all galleries. Families can dive into hands-on Christmas craft activities, and last-minute shoppers can breathe a sigh of relief: the Museum Shop is offering a special 30% discount on giftware, knitwear and accessories. Think ethically made scarves, cosy woollens, design-forward homewares — the kind of gifts that look like you actually planned ahead.

It’s the rare December outing that inspires wonder, slows your pulse and invites you to connect with something bigger than the season’s to-do list. Trek the forest, wade through the waters, and crouch unseen as you enter the environments of the world’s most beautiful creatures.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year is more than an exhibition. It’s a reminder — gentle or fierce, depending on the photograph — that the natural world is alive, astonishing and profoundly worth protecting.

So as you’re mapping out your December calendar, leave room for a little wild magic. The planet is calling, softly illuminated and waiting inside the National Wool Museum.
