The announcement sees the guitarist and singer-songwriter return to regional stages with his uniquely participatory live concept, where audiences help shape each night’s setlist by submitting song requests in advance, covers included. Drawing from a catalogue spanning more than four decades, the result is a shifting performance that moves between deep cuts, fan favourites and unexpected reinterpretations, shaped in real time by each crowd.
The spring leg opens on 4 September at The Playhouse, Civic Theatre in Newcastle, before threading through a wide arc of regional centres including Singleton, Queanbeyan, Griffith, Milton, Bega, Daylesford, Echuca, Bendigo, Ballarat and Cowes, concluding in Bathurst on 28 November.
Tickets are on sale now via dieselmusic.com.au.
What has emerged through the BY REQUEST series is a live format that resists predictability. Alongside audience-selected tracks, Diesel often weaves in songs that trace his own musical lineage, creating an atmosphere that sits somewhere between concert and conversation.
“The longer we do these shows, the more I realise just how much fun it is handing over the reins,” Diesel says. “Hearing everything from Hendrix to Gershwin, and even playing ‘Moon River’ or Rihanna’s ‘Stay’, has been unexpected in the best way. I can’t wait to see what comes through for this next run.”
He adds that the regional focus has deepened the project’s sense of exchange. “I’m thrilled to be visiting more parts of regional NSW and VIC. The anecdotes behind the song choices are inspiring and humbling, and there’s a real sense of shared taste that keeps growing.”
Operating under the name Diesel, Mark Lizotte first emerged with Johnny Diesel & The Injectors in the late 1980s, going on to build a career defined by ARIA Awards, chart success and a catalogue of more than 400 APRA-registered songs spanning rock, blues, soul and pop. His most recent album, Bootleg Melancholy, continues that evolution, balancing craftsmanship with an enduring live instinct.
The BY REQUEST spring tour continues that trajectory, reframing the stage as a collaborative space where repertoire is not fixed, but continually reshaped by the audience in the room.
