With a stunning lineup of 42 films, this year’s festival is reaffirming its place as the largest French film festival outside of France. Whether you’re a long-time Francophile or a newcomer to French cinema, this festival promises to be a cinematic treat you won’t want to miss.

Last year, more than 188,000 film lovers flocked to the festival, and this year it’s even bigger! For 2025, the AF FFF is expanding to five new cities: Ballarat, Ballina, Warriewood, Warrawong, and Darwin. So, no matter where you are, there’s a chance to catch some of the best films from France.

2024 has been an extraordinary year for French culture, from the Paris Olympic Games to the reopening of Notre-Dame, all capturing the world’s attention. Back home in Australia, we’ve seen a surge of French cultural influence with events like the launch of the French Australian Cultural Exchange Foundation (FACEF), the first-ever French Sounds of Summer in Canberra, and exhibitions of French artists in Australian galleries and museums. Now, the French Film Festival is set to continue that momentum with its diverse and captivating program.

Here are some of the standout films to look out for:

• Opening Night Special – “Monsieur Aznavour”: The festival kicks off with a biographical celebration of Charles Aznavour, one of France’s most beloved entertainers. Played by Tahar Rahim (Golden Globe-nominated for The Mauritanian), Aznavour’s rise to stardom is a story of overcoming hardship, finding success through his heartfelt music, and becoming a global icon. This is a must-watch for fans of Aznavour and French culture alike.
• “The Count of Monte Cristo”: It’s been over 50 years since the iconic tale of Edmond Dantès was brought to life in French cinema, and now, actor Pierre Niney leads a star-studded cast in a fresh adaptation of this thrilling tale of betrayal, revenge, and redemption. Set in 1815 Marseille, Dantès’ life is turned upside down when he’s betrayed by his rivals and wrongfully imprisoned. His quest for vengeance will keep you on the edge of your seat.
• “Being Maria”: This powerful film dives into the real-life story of actress Maria Schneider, played by Anamaria Vartolomei. At just 16, Maria finds herself thrust into the world of cinema under the watchful eye of director Bernardo Bertolucci and co-star Marlon Brando. But when an infamous on-set incident leads to scandal and legal battles, Maria’s life is never the same. Being Maria asks an essential question: Is it ever just “show business” for women in the film industry?
