A collaborative celebration of shiraz is happening at Provenance Wines this winter

In an epic culinary collision, Geelong’s best beverage businesses join forces to showcase the number one winter wine.

Nothing warms the cockles quite like a full-bodied blend of rich, red shiraz. To sip, to savour and to share, shiraz is the choice wine for winter.

Acclaimed Geelong estate, Provenance Wines is recognising the reds prominence this chilly season, partnering with fellow drink masters Bellarine Distillery, and Great Ocean Brewing to host three shiraz-centred events.

Across the weekend of Friday 1 August and Saturday 2 August, the trio will offer a Shiraz Degustation Dinner, a Shiraz Masterclass and a Fireside Session where live music and good food and drink are on the menu.

The weekend kicks off on Friday night with a session meant to fill bellies and feature shiraz’s partner profile. Designed as 4 course or 7 course pairings, the Shiraz Degustation Dinner is open to 60 diners for the evening, ready to explore the marrying of select award-winning shiraz’s from across the region with Provenance’s tantalising, kitchen creations. The hearty menu plays into Provenance’s food philosophy of sourcing seasonal, local, sustainable, and ethical produce. The dynamic nature of the kitchen means that the menu is subject to change, however the current set menu boasts snack starters of Potato cake / tomato powder, Fried chicken / fermented Fyansford honey, Parsnip rosti / smoked shiitake, Japanese milk bread / ‘pan jus’, Spiced pumpkin chawanmushi and Sea urchin / bbq prawn offered with 2022 Macedon Chardonnay, venison, kangaroo tail and Hopkin’s River rump cap making up the protein components of the main courses, and Blackcurrant leaf meringue and Cumquat marmalade / mandarin sorbet topping the dining experience.

The following day, Certified Sommelier, WSET Educator, Provenance Sales Manager, and proudly local Geelong boy, Tom Brushfield will facilitate the Shiraz masterclass. Shiraz is the sole focus of the masterclass, with Provenance’s highly acclaimed current (2023) release featured alongside two of their Geelong Best Wine of Show-winning Shiraz – the highly treasured and mighty 2016 and 2021 vintages plucked from their museum program, the heroes of the days. Additional wines on the taster board will include selections from France’s Northern Rhone and Australia’s Barossa Valley to compare to, plus an exclusive preview of the yet-to-be-released, and only produced in exceptional years, rare Provenance “Ironstone” Shiraz. With a no-knowledge-required format, the masterclass suits everyone from complete novices to Shiraz sleuths. Basic wine pairing snacks are included, and by the end of the session, participants will be entertained, informed, and feeling rosy from the red-focused event. At $25 a ticket, the value for money is considerable. The session is only open to 30 participants so get in quick.

Rounding out the Shiraz showcase for the weekend is the Fireside Sessions. It’s simple – an 18+ event where good food, great drinks and live music and entertainment are the offering. Live music will be provided by local guitarist Grant Higgins, and spinning tunes will be DJ Wigginz for what will be a celebration of the cooler climate. Branded as a night of bold reds, blazing fires, and big vibes, the drink selection further includes craft spirit samples from Bellarine Distillery and fresh frothies from Great Ocean Road Brewing.

This is just one of the great events taking place at Provenance this winter. On Sunday 27 July, Provenance will be welcoming back Piano Bar to take over the space for a lunch time sing along.
