Anglesea has added a remarkable new gem to its coastal collection with the opening of The Monty, a sophisticated retreat that officially launched in December 2025. Nestled just moments from the scenic river and Anglesea’s inviting beaches, this modern reimagining of a classic 80s motel is set to become the new must-visit destination along the Great Ocean Road.

Located directly across from the Anglesea River boardwalk and within walking distance of shops, cafes, and the main beach, The Monty offers the ideal location for those looking to explore the area. Formerly the Anglesea Riverside Motel, The Monty is the latest venture from the team behind the acclaimed Sunnymead Hotel in Aireys Inlet, bringing a fresh and exciting layer to the Great Ocean Road’s coastal charm.

The vision is clear from street view – bright, sunny, and sophisticated. A white-washed exterior reflects the airy landscape with hearty plants like cacti and aloe vera, and of course Palm Trees, building on the inspiration. CeraStribley Architects have masterfully transformed the property, blending retro charm with contemporary design in a way that pays homage to the area’s relaxed coastal spirit while meeting the demands of today’s discerning traveller. 

Begin with check-in at the front lobby where texture and materiality are heroes. Large dusty rose tiles lead the way to a cosy fireplace sectioned off by a built in concave leather upholstered bench with geometric details acting as screens, pillaring up the the ceiling. he walls are coated the same blush tone as the tiles, immediately offering a sense of relaxation. Around the bend, you’re met with pink and white checkered tile flooring, welcoming you into the reception space. A L-bench desk is made from pink stone wraps around, and cornered beyond this you will booths, ready for their upcoming era.

Heading through to the back carpark, you will easily locate your rooms – just look for the bold orange doors. The 16 thoughtfully reworked rooms, including two fully accessible ones, exude effortless elegance, and the outdoor pool and lounge area have been given a stylish facelift that screams Palm Springs. The enclosed pool is the stuff of resort dreams featuring a deck around for lounging under umbrellas (again featuring Fenton and Fenton furniture touches) , a pink checkered tile outdoor shower, and a pool and spa that are perfect additions to the water-surrounded town. It’s a focal point of the carpark, directly outside of the rooms to allow for ease of access. The Monty offers an experience that is equal parts comfort and character, combining thoughtful accessibility features with a playful, design-driven atmosphere that ensures a stay to remember.

The interiors have been curated with furnishings from the renowned Fenton & Fenton, whose bold, artful pieces breathe new life into the space. The comfort pieces, (Rocco Arm Chairs and Lull Glossy Bedside Tables) with their eclectic yet refined flair, evoke a sense of coastal chic while maintaining a lightness and ease that perfectly mirrors Anglesea’s breezy vibe. The devil is in the details – the built in headboards, the magazine slip, the matching Bose speaker to console table, the giant wave mirror, the clothing nook, and the mint green and white bathroom, create an instantly chic yet cosy atmosphere; one that invites you to lounge on the bed and decorate the hangers with your outfits. Every corner of The Monty has been designed to feel both stylish and welcoming, offering a sophisticated take on the quintessential Australian coastal getaway.
