Hidden beneath the red-brick chimneys of the revitalised Federal Mills in North Geelong, Anther Distillery isn’t just a maker of spirits; it’s a modern-day alchemy lab, where science, history and handcrafted flavour converge with unmistakable style. Founded in 2016 by scientist-turned-distiller Dr. Dervilla McGowan and cocktail-savvy co-founder Sebastian Reaburn, Anther is the kind of passion project that turns into a regional landmark.

With more than 45 years of combined hospitality experience between them, McGowan and Reaburn set out to explore what Australian native botanicals — saltbush, Geraldton wax, earthy juniper, and more — could do when guided by scientific rigour and boundless creativity. That curiosity paid off fast. By 2018, Anther Gin was crowned Champion Australian Gin, and in 2021 the distillery collected Silver and Bronze medals at the prestigious International Wine & Spirits Competition. It’s an extraordinary achievement for its first global entry.
Inside their historic wool-mill cellar door, the copper stills gleam and the air smells of juniper and juniper’s botanical cousins. Here, Anther serves handcrafted spirits, tasting flights, cocktails and curated events. Whether you’re sipping a crisp Anther Geelong Dry Gin, smooth navy-strength gin, or a limited-release Cherry-Honey Whisky Liqueur, the commitment to native Australian flora and small-batch tradition shines through.
Beyond the bottles, Anther has become a cultural touchpoint, a place where locals crowd around bars sampling seasonal cocktails, join in distilling classes, and celebrate community as much as the craft. They’re also strong advocates of women’s health and frequently team up with not-for-profits and organisations to run workshops and events in support of causes.
In a world of mass-produced spirits, Anther Distillery stands out for its heart, brains and relentless dedication to flavour. For anyone chasing something genuine, wild and distinctly Australian, this is as real as it gets.
