There’s something so comforting about settling in for the night, popcorn in hand, as the credits begin for what’s set to be a great film. The Movie Garden in Ballarat is all about this experience, and has added a few extra in for good measure, with No Lights No Lycra dance nights held at the venue and vintage arcade games for a different kind of entertainment. We spoke with one of the organisers Beth Lamont on how the event came to be, her favourite movie picks and the cinema experience in general.

“Every girl on the tour had someone they knew at the club that was hurt, or close to being hurt, or who had passed away. A lot of us were friends with someone who’s name was the first name released when they started listing the casualties.”

2015 was a considerably busy year for Garbage, who were celebrating the 20-year anniversary of their iconic self-titled album. In conjunction with a deluxe reissue, Garbage ventured out on a relatively brief tour in which they exclusively played material from the early years.

Charles Bukowski said it well when he wrote; “If you’re doing it for money or fame, don’t do it.” Poetry isn’t something for material gain. At its core poetry is a form of expression, release and for discovering the inner most elements of who you are, and also, as the trio behind lowercase poetry have soon found, it’s also about connecting with others.

No doubt you’re across the concept of a diss track – a song that explicitly aims to take a specific person or group down a notch through its lyrics. On The Dream is Over, the second studio album from Canadian indie-punks Pup, the opening number is entitled ‘If This Tour Doesn’t Kill You, I Will’

There’s something about the colder months of the year that inspires creativity. It’s not everyday you get to talk with a rising artist moments before they vanish from a flesh-eating, horse infested mountainside. Most people avoid ever encountering such circumstances, as The Sugarcanes’ frontwoman Lucy Wilson would’ve attested if she hadn’t just been set upon by crazed hippies in the woods and turned into a stew (it’s a busy mountain). If you can imagine managing and playing guitar in one of Australia’s biggest bands, being out on the road for nine months of the year, living on the other side of the world from your friends and family, and raising a little human being, all at the same time, you may begin to understand a day in the life of Thy Art Is Murder’s Andy Marsh – and my surprise when I found him cheery and bright before his first cup of coffee. “It’s not too early,” he assures me. “It’s about 7:30 in the morning. I’ve got a nine month old, so sleep is a rarity!”
