How Lambys Tavern continues to be a Geelong nightlife institution

It's a generational drinking and dancing spot and a main character in most weekend stories.

When Geelong locals mention Mario Kart, they’re not always talking Nintendo. Around here, it’s a late-night legend born in an underground venue where wool, wild nights and dancefloor chaos collide.

Lambys Tavern is the backbone of Geelong’s nightlife, tucked beneath the iconic bluestone building that also houses the National Wool Museum and Black Sheep Restaurant. Together, they form a truly Geelong trifecta: heritage upstairs, hospitality next door and pure party energy down below. Lambys is where the lights drop, the volume spikes and the weekend officially begins.

Descending the staircase into the low-roofed, timber-pillared space feels like stepping into a secret bunker built for mischief. A central wraparound bar keeps the flow moving—dancefloor to bathrooms, bathrooms to pool tables, into the booths, then straight back to the dancefloor again. A second bar at the rear keeps the drinks coming. DJ’s keep the tunes rolling from 9pm until late on Friday and Saturday, with the lineup dropped on socials weekly.

Beyond the buzzy interior is a bluestone courtyard and smokers’ deck—perfect for cooling off between bangers. Inside, sheep-themed décor and retro alcohol mirrors stand witness to decades of late-night stories that probably shouldn’t be retold.

From Friday to Saturday, Lambys pumps until the early hours, powered by big tracks, bigger crowds and drinks that go down a little too easily. On tap, local hero Furphy sits alongside James Squire, Stone & Wood and Vok cocktail pours like Sex on the Beach and Raspberry Ripple, plus fridges stocked with bottles, cans and the new Beenleigh Hard Pineapple Crush. But the real insider secret? Between 9pm and 10pm, order a Mario Kart. It’s 2-for-1. Don’t ask. Just enjoy!
