Melbourne’s comedy playground: One night, endless laughter at Library Up Late

Melbourne is renowned for its cultural heartbeat, and this April, two of the city’s most iconic institutions are joining forces for a night that promises to redefine after-hours entertainment.

As the Melbourne International Comedy Festival celebrates its 40th year and State Library Victoria marks an astonishing 170 years, the historic Library is set to transform into a late-night playground of laughter, music, and culture.

Keep up to date with all things arts, exhibitions and stage here.

On Thursday 16 April, from 7.30pm to 10.30pm, Library Up Late invites audiences to wander freely between pop-up stages scattered across the Library, catching a rotating lineup of Festival favourites, including Annie Boyle, David O’Doherty, Sammy J, Sashi Perera, Takashi Wakasugi, and more. Forget choosing just one show — this is a comedy crawl with a twist, where every corner of the Library holds a new surprise.

But the fun doesn’t stop at stand-up. Karaoke lovers can unleash their inner divas at the Lonely Hearts Karaoke Club, hosted by Geraldine Quinn, while the iconic La Trobe Reading Room under the Dome becomes a late-night dancefloor, complete with DJs Gavin Campbell and Gaff E, alongside roving performances that blur the lines between theatre and nightlife. Visitors can even explore the Library’s treasures after hours, including exclusive access to the exhibition Rebel Heart.

Part comedy, part cultural takeover, Library Up Late is a uniquely Melbourne experience: a chance to celebrate milestones, wander historic halls, and laugh until your cheeks ache, all in one unforgettable night.
