Wine Window: Bannockburn Vineyards favour freshness with their 1314 Shiraz

Slide head first into this vintage shiraz selection.

Barwon Edge Venue Manager Charles Roy goes Golden Plains for his latest drop.

The Wine

This month I’m drinking the 2024 vintage of the 1314 Shiraz from Bannockburn Vineyards. Founded in the early 1970s just outside of Geelong, Bannockburn is renowned for its stunning shiraz, chardonnay and pinot noir – notably being one of the first to produce this variety in Australia.

The Why

I once heard that the secret to drinking good value wines is to find the second or third tier of wines from great wineries. The 1314 Range ticks the great winery box, yet the quality is anything but second-class. Rather, these wines are made with freshness and early drinking in mind, with all the care and attention to detail you’d expect from estate grown fruit and vinification by head winemaker, Matt Holmes.

The Taste

The 1314 range is all about freshness and this wine has it in spades. Think black and dark red fruits, floral notes, classic cool climate white pepper and tell-tale Moorabool olive tapenade & smoked meats. On the palate, a beautifully complex, sweet-fruited core, is strictly medium bodied and boasts bright acidity. It pairs perfectly with a Neapolitan style capricciosa pizza and an open fire on a cold wintery night.

The Take Home

The 1314 Range is widely available, including at these great independent stores: Blackhearts & Sparrows, and Winepress.

RRP $27
