With her upcoming album No Prospects, Riordan marks a personal and artistic evolution. The title, though seemingly bleak, is a defiant act of reclaiming a past label. “It comes from the song No Prospects,” she explains. “I remember thinking, ‘Why are Roc Nation and Atlantic Records inviting me to their studios?’ It stemmed from high school when I was called ‘No Prospects’ after leaving school due to illness.” The album is Riordan’s powerful response to those who doubted her, transforming a term of mockery into a symbol of achievement.
No Prospects is a celebration of confidence and growth, a marked departure from her previous album, Songs I Wrote as Therapy. While the latter was born from deep emotional pain, addressing topics like infertility and child loss, No Prospects reflects a more assured artist. “This album comes from a confident place,” Riordan says. “It’s still reflective, but now I feel proud of who I am as an artist.”
The sound of No Prospects is infused with early 2000s RnB influences, thanks to Riordan’s time writing in Atlanta. The album blends rich harmonies, synths, and piano with fresh pop beats. She worked with talented producers such as HXSTLE, Ido Sagir, and Bobsled Jimmy, all of whom helped craft the album’s vibrant sound.
For Riordan, the album is a personal triumph, not just artistically, but also as a mother. Her son, Archie, who was five at the time, plays drums on the title track. “I’m so proud of him and love that he’s part of something so special,” she says.
Riordan will celebrate the release with a live performance in Geelong on March 22. Playing the full album live, she’ll be joined by Ido Sagir for a memorable evening.
No Prospects is not just an album for Riordan; it’s a testament to perseverance, personal growth, and the power of reclaiming one’s narrative.
