I was driving home from the supermarket not so long ago, balancing the seesaw of maintaining road concentration with the ponderation of how my years have disappeared like a dog in a thunderstorm, all the while listening to my ‘Planes, Trains and Automobiles’ mix CD. It’s a pretty sweet compilation I put together with song titles containing a mode of transportation. Yeah, I know, I’m pretty cool. Email me if you want it. Or don’t. I’m not good at responding, and dislike a cluttered email. But it is a sweet mix. You’ve got Scatterbrain, Dinosaur Jr, Jawbreaker, Beastie Boys, Sonic Youth and more.
As I was approaching home, Soul Asylum’s ‘Runaway Train’ came on and so I found myself happily singing along with, and considerably worse than, Dave Pirner. Perhaps happily is not the best choice of words given it was written as Pirner’s “metaphor for depression” and its accompanying video featured some 36 kids from The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. But singing along I was. So, I pull up, eject the CD and you would not believe what song was playing on the radio. That’s right, Mark Ronson’s ‘Uptown Funk’. No, it was ‘Runaway Train’. Word to your mother.
Now, the joy I found in that moment would not, I imagine, be comparable to say, receiving a phone call telling me I am a Division One winner, but more on the level of when you’re in the shower and you cup your hands high on your chest to let them pool with water before dropping the water to the shower base while making a kaboom noise level of joy. And sometimes that’s all a day needs.
I hope your 2025 outshines your 2024, and I hope you enjoy these January festivals and events…

Geelong Beer Festival
Johnstone Park, Geelong – January 18
We’re all here, drinking beer. Drinking beer without a care
The ‘beer before bread’ theory is that the Agricultural Revolution was inspired to quench the thirst for beer over supplying grain. What will the Geelong Beer Festival inspire? Who knows, but shenanigans are sure to be plentiful. As well as a huge list of beers and ciders, festival-goers can also enjoy tasty grub from the likes of Amazing Calamari, Chubby Bao, Happy Mexican, Little Dumping Van and Pizza Party Hire. To top it all off you have music from British India, Felipe Baldomir and Jordy Maxwell.
