Geelong Youth Choir are hosting free singing workshops for students aged 8 – 18

Calling all school-aged singers: the choir is calling!

The Geelong Youth Choir (GYC) is calling on young singers across the region to take part in We Sing, a fully funded community engagement initiative designed to unite students through the joy of choral music. Supported by a City of Greater Geelong Community Strengthening Grant, the program offers an immersive, free musical experience for students from F–12 schools.

Over three weekends, participants aged 8 to 18 are invited to attend two workshops before culminating in a grand performance with a live orchestra. The sessions are fully supervised by the GYC team, providing a safe, supportive environment for all levels of experience.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for young people who already love to sing or would like to explore what it means to sing in a choir,” said Genevieve Newton, GYC Committee Member and Project Manager. “The program is perfect for schools without choirs, and a fantastic extension opportunity for experienced singers. We are reaching out to schools to spread the word in their communities.”

Parents and guardians can enrol their child via this online form. Once registered, both the parent and the nominated performing arts teacher at the child’s school will receive digital learning materials to assist in preparing the two massed choir pieces prior to the first workshop.

We Sing is designed to be flexible and inclusive. Participants can join as individuals, small groups, or full school choirs, and no school supervision is required since all activities occur on weekends. Alongside the massed choir works, ensembles from the Geelong Youth Choir will be featured, providing a high-calibre, immersive musical experience for beginners and advanced singers alike.

The program comes from Geelong Youth Choir who for nearly 40 years has nurtured young voices and enriched lives through music. Founded in 1988, the choir was established to give young people across the region access to high-quality choral training, musicianship, and sight-singing. Children and young people engage with a wide variety of music, building confidence in performance while developing vocal and musicianship skills through Kodály-based programs. From fun, interactive games for younger singers to advanced training for older students, every child is supported to progress at their own pace.

Programs include Prelude Choir which is their training choir for middle to upper primary age children, Cantore Choir, an auditioned choir for ages 10–18, and their Voices of Geelong, which is a SATB choir for adults.

Through We Sing, the GYC aims not only to foster young talent but also to strengthen the cultural fabric of Geelong, offering families and communities a chance to celebrate music together.
