While the Dunedin sound took off in the 80’s, starting a musical movement and ultimately spearheading the indie rock genre, Robots In Love have crafted their own sound outside of the region’s famous foundations, adding to a vibrant melting pot of music.

“Per capita, Dunedin has more musicians than any other city in New Zealand, and it’s a very eclectic scene. A lot of electronic music, a lot of punk, indie, metal. We can fit into different scenes so we get to play a lot,” explains frontwoman Elenor Raynor and drummer Alex Burchell.

“We are very prolific; we’ve released hundreds of tracks between the two of us, and we cover a lot of genres; from dark pop to industrial, drum’n’bass to metal. It works because we are so passionate about what we do.”

This wide scope for experimentation and influence has informed Robots In Love’s current album ACTIVATE!, drawing from the deep pockets of their music fascinations.

“With ACTIVATE! we were able to bring it all together. We usually describe it as a combination of rock and electronic music, and it appeals to people who are open to hearing something new. You never quite know what we’re going to do next. Mik (Thornley) laid down some slide guitar over an industrial track we’d written. That’s not something you’d expect, but it works.”

The album took a lengthy two years to pull together, focusing on pushing the bounds of their music and producing the best product possible.

Raynor explains, “Alex and I produced it together. Ideas just go flying around the room, with us building the songs as we go. It’s very exciting! Alex did the final mix and produced drum sounds which worked across all the songs. During the mixing process he went back and forth and made adjustments to get all the different genres gelling together. We wanted it to flow, so people could lose themselves listening to it. We also produced a lot of remixes during the process, for example a dance remix of the metal song ‘The Sequel’. So we are planning a release on vinyl of remixes.”

To celebrate, the three-piece are heading on an Australian tour, heading into the Barwon Club for one night of epic electronic immersion.

“We have never played in Geelong before. We’ve been told the Barwon Club has a great vibe so we are really looking forward to it.”

On the cold winter’s night, you can expect to be warmed from your ears to your toes with their ambient swirls leading to full body explosions.

Of their live show, they describe it as “very energetic! We absolutely love what we do and we are totally in the zone when we play. Quite a few of our songs begin with atmospheric, moody sounds, and build to an epic finale, and we love it when people come with us on that sonic journey.”

Being their first shows in Geelong, it’s time to show them a reason to return!
