Fresh off a run of global festival appearances and sold-out headline shows, The Dare returns to Australia as part of the Laneway Festival run, but the real after-hours action comes once the main stages shut down. Presented by Penny Drop and Frontier Touring, freakquencies will take over Liberty Hall in Sydney on Sunday 8 February and 170 Russell in Melbourne on Friday 13 February, transforming both venues into full-throttle club zones.
Born in the basements of downtown Manhattan, freakquencies is more than a DJ night. It is an invitation-only energy brought to life, where sweaty dancefloors, left-of-centre bangers and surprise guests collide. The Dare’s sharp-edged, bloghouse-inspired sound has become synonymous with the party itself, earning a reputation as an “if you know, you know” fixture of New York nightlife.
These Australian editions turn the volume up even further, with DJ sets from UK indie provocateurs Wet Leg and fast-rising New York outfit Geese, joining The Dare behind the decks to trade tracks and keep the tempo high until the lights flicker on. It’s the Laneway Festival powerhouses coming together for a night of pure ecstasy under the strobe lights.
The Dare’s return follows a breakout few years. His debut album What’s Wrong With New York? made him a global talking point, while his freakquencies nights ballooned from basement bars to boiler rooms packed with thousands. Recent editions have pulled massive crowds in New York and expanded internationally, alongside guest DJs including Blood Orange, Danny L Harle and 2manydjs.
Australia has already proven fertile ground. The Dare’s 2024 visit sold out three headline shows across Sydney and Melbourne, cementing his reputation as both a magnetic live performer and a DJ who understands the fine art of chaos. These upcoming club nights promise the same sweaty abandon, but in a more intimate, no-holds-barred setting.
For fans of indie sleaze, late-night euphoria and dancefloors that blur the line between gig and party, freakquencies is shaping up as one of the most talked-about club events of the summer.
