Ballarat’s iconic The Unicorn cafe has a message in a bottle for you – literally. This historic venue is promoting its new breakfast and lunch menu by handing out messages in bottles that highlight the ethos in providing cafe goers with delicious and environmentally sustainable foods.
Designed for conscious diners, each meal is made with fresh produce and products locally sourced from around the region, as well as practising paddock to plate processes and slow cooking techniques.
Each plate is fashioned with your health and well-being in mind, all without compromising taste. If the Mediterranean Basilio torn bread salad is anything to go by, then taste seems to be increased by ten-fold. With Yendon tomato and cucumber, spring onion, quinoa, spanish onion, parsley and pomegranate balsamic vinaigrette to bring it all together, we’re convinced that our taste buds will be well looked after.
Other menu stand outs include the Chef’s chopping block which is catered to vegans, vegetarians and the omnivorous and is a ‘surprise’ from the kitchen chef, and the ancient green salad, filled with farro, lentils, chickpeas, quinoa, smashed avo, broad beans, radish, basil, pistachio and Meredith goat curd… we can hear our stomachs rejoicing.
But if you’re just a simple chips kinda person, the cafe also prides itself on the fresh cut, not frozen, and locally sourced hand cut chips ‘lovers’ basket, with fennel, lemon & garlic-thyme salt and Unicorn green aioli. You can also load it with smoky beef brisket and melted cheese if you so desire.
There’s no denying that this new menu is fresh, yum and if you’re vegan, vegetarian or gluten free, you can load up guilt free! The best part is you can get quality meals at low cost, with the majority of the menu being under $20, winning!
Pair it with their award winning coffee, with beans sourced from Castlemaine and you might never want to leave.

Open 7 days a week for breakfast and lunch, the Unicorn menu is much like its venues name, unique and rare.
