The weekend kicks off on Friday 8 May, with Naarm punk up-and-comers Public Figures, who will headline an all-ages, alcohol-free evening designed in collaboration with the Victorian Government’s Amplify initiative. The band were just down our way playing the Swell Seasons at Torquay SLSC, winning over an eager crowd of local punters. For young music fans, it promises a high-octane night of loud guitars, soaring vocals, and that unmistakable sense of belonging that only punk shows can deliver. “This is a show run by young people for young people,” says Dr David Corbet, founder of The Sound Doctor and a local GP. “You don’t want to miss this one.”
Things slow down a little the next day. Saturday 9 May, marks a special debut for acclaimed singer-songwriter William Crighton, who brings his immersive blend of folk, blues, and distinctly Australian storytelling to Anglesea for the first time. Performing tracks from his latest album Colonial Drift, Crighton’s set promises to turn the modest community hall into a space of profound musical intimacy. “Bringing artists of this calibre into a small coastal town is incredibly special,” says Dr Corbet. “You don’t have to travel to the city to feel something profound in a room full of people—we can create those moments right here.”
The weekend concludes with a heartwarming Sunday session on 10 May as the roots duo Mama Kin Spender take the stage for an afternoon show. With rich harmonies, infectious energy, and a stage presence that commands attention, the performance provides an uplifting way for families to celebrate Mother’s Day together. “It’s about connection,” Dr Corbet reflects. “Marking Mother’s Day with music that will stay with you long after you’ve left the hall feels incredibly meaningful.”
It’s another major win for The Sound Doctor who have been tasked with turning Anglesea into a live music destination – pulling in massive touring artists from international waters and Australia alike. Since its inception, The Sound Doctor has been quietly redefining the Surf Coast’s music scene, transforming the Anglesea Memorial Hall into an intimate venue adored by both artists and audiences. Recognised in 2024 as Best Regional Venue (under 50 gigs) at the Music Victoria Awards, the initiative champions not just music, but community wellbeing. “Live music isn’t just entertainment,” Dr Corbet explains. “It’s about belonging and creating shared experiences that make a place—and its people—feel alive.”
Tickets for all three shows are available now here. For those looking to experience Anglesea at its most vibrant, May 8–10 is a weekend to mark firmly in the calendar. While you’re at it, book your weekend stay at the divine, refined motel stay, The Monty.
